Embroidery types

Flat embroidery

  • Flat embroidery is a technique where stitches are embroidered flat on the hat. It’s used mostly for small details.
  • Minimum thickness for shapes: 0.05” (1.3 mm).
  • Maximum thickness for shapes: 0.5” (12.5 mm).
  • Minimum height for lowercase letters: 0.25” (6.4 mm).
  • Minimum height for uppercase letters: 0.3” (7.6 mm).
  • Any text smaller than 0.25” (6.4 mm) in height will be a run stitch

3D puff embroidery

  • 3D puff is a technique where embroidery is raised with a foam insert under the stitching. It’s used mostly for big shapes.
  • Minimum thickness for shapes: 0.2” (5.1 mm).
  • Maximum thickness for shapes: 0.5” (12.5 mm).
  • Minimum height for letters: 0.75” (19.05 mm).
  • 3D puff isn’t available for side logos.

Partial 3D puff embroidery

  • This is a technique where both flat embroidery and 3D puff are used in the same graphic. See above for details on each type.
  • Minimum of 0.05” (1.3 mm) spacing between 3D objects.

Must-follow guidelines

  1. Use true-to-size graphics
Graphics must be true to size. For example, if you’re using a high template file on a low profile hat or a side logo, details may not match requirements for that specific profile and the file should be adjusted.
  2. Use solid shapes and colors only
Don’t include photographic images, gradients, or blend effects.
  3. Use transparent backgrounds
    Graphics should include transparent backgrounds.
  4. Submit vector files
We highly recommend submitting your embroidery graphics as vector files (AI, PDF, EPS). If you don’t have vector files available, raster graphics (PNG) can be used as well if the resolution is at least 300 dpi.
  5. Stay within the maximum stitch count
The maximum stitch count for our embroidery graphics is 15,000. If the stitch count goes over our maximum, we’ll contact you to revise your artwork.

Digitization

Digitization is a process that converts your design file to a format that supports embroidery.

  • It costs $8.95 per file. Each embroidery type (flat/3D/partial) requires a separate digitized file.
  • You can re-use your digitized files for future orders. You won’t have to get them digitized again unless you change the design or decide to use them for hats that have different embroidery file requirements.
  • We only digitize files when they’re part of an order.
  • Our digitization process is designed to match our machine capabilities, so we don’t accept files that have been digitized elsewhere.

Tips for best results

  • The best way to make sure your embroidery design looks the way you want is to order a sample of your work. We also recommend ordering an embroidery sample to learn about our techniques.
  • Check out this page for tips on how to create perfect embroidery files.
  • Embroidery is not printing, so most graphics you use on other products will likely not be suitable for embroidery.
  • Keep it simple: clean designs with bold lines and text work best for embroidery.
  • If your design is too complex (eg. contains gradients or intricate details like small text), we’ll need to contact you to revise your graphic.

Embroidery disclaimers

  • If it’s physically possible to digitize your graphic, we’ll digitize it. If your design doesn’t meet our guidelines, we can’t guarantee desirable results.
  • We use a run stitch for fine details in flat embroidery.
  • The generated preview on the mockup is for visual reference only and will not always match the final result.

Available thread colors

Max of 2 colors for 3D puff, 4 for flat embroidery, 6 for partial 3D puff. Your embroidery file should only contain these colors.
